IAEA was unable to elect a new director

Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not succeeded today in special session to elect a new director general of the organization. As a result, a separate vote on the two available candidates, none of the applicants were unable to gain necessary to win two-thirds of the votes.

As ITAR-TASS, and now the nomination procedure and registration of candidates for the post of Director General of the IAEA will be run again. Election of a new head of the agency will be held at the session of the Governing Council in June.

Both the applicant – the representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, Yukiya Amano, and his counterpart from the Republic of South Africa, Abdul Samad Minty – will be able to re-make their nominations. On the margins of the IAEA does not rule out that they could be company as the candidate of one of the Latin American countries.

current IAEA Director General Mohammed al-Baradei said the firm intention to leave his post. His term expires in November this year.
