Canada condemns brutal repression by the military junta in Guinea

The Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said in a statement that Canada condemns the brutal repression Guinean security forces of political demonstrations in Conakry.

The use of violence, including sexual violence, to quell political demonstrations is completely unacceptable, said Cannon.

The minister noted that Canada has requested the return of the African country to constitutional order since December of 2008 a military group, with Captain Musa Camara Dadis forward, executed a coup.

We are increasingly concerned about the statements of the board ruling that clearly contradict their commitment to a transition of power to civilians and, in particular the statements by the junta leader, Captain Dadis Musa Camara regarding his possible candidacy in an election, said Cannon.

Ottawa also advises Canadians to refrain from traveling to the country.

Local radio stations reported that in the last few hours at least 160 people have died and some 1,250 have been injured after surgery, on Monday, the Guinean security forces against the opposition in Conakry.

The opposition took to the streets to denounce, among other things The Chamber intends to stand as candidates in presidential elections next January.
