The eruption Eyjafjallajökull near the glacier, which began late Saturday, throwing smoke for up to four miles high and gradually intensifies, said geophysicist Steinunn Jakobsdottir to a local newspaper.

Another scientist said be concerned that the activity could cause an eruption on Mount Katla, a volcano “very powerful” resting under a nearby glacier.

“Eyjafjallajökull hardly move without the Monte Katla want into action, “said Pall Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland. “Therefore, it is extremely important to monitor events closely,” he said.

An eruption at Mount Katla large quantities could melt ice and cause massive floodi1000ng, affecting a city in the vicinity of 300 inhabitants, Einarsson said.
