British paper apologizes for making fun of the Pope

LONDON (Reuters) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain apologized on Saturday a memorandum of a public official who suggested that Pope Benedict XVI should start a hall of abortions in a hospital when he visits the country this year.

The document, leaked to the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, also included suggestions that the pope would bless a homosexual marriage and throwing condoms papal flag when it comes to Britain in September.

Britain”s ambassador to the Vatican despite the government said senior Church officials said the Foreign Office.

“This is a document that clearly insane in any way reflect the policy or vision of the United Kingdom, “said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

” Many of the ideas of the document are clearly misguided, naive and disrespectful, “he added .

public official”s proposals, outlined in a memorandum entitled “The ideal visit would include …”, circulated among officials in the office of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Downing Street , and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The memorandum, which had a note by admitting that some of the plans were “exaggerated,” also alluded to the sexual scandals involving priests in a number of countries and suggested that the pope should launch a helpline for abused children.

He said that no minister saw the document and it was withdrawn when officials learned of its existence. The individual responsible was assigned to other tasks.

“He has been told orally and in writing that he was a serious misjudgment and has accepted this vision,” he said.

“The Ministry deeply regrets this incident and is deeply sorry for the offense it has caused. We strongly value the close and productive relationship between the United Kingdom and the Holy See and we hope to deepen more the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom later this year, “he said.

Benedict XVI”s trip to be held between 16 and 19 September, will be the first papal visit country since 1982. The pontiff will meet with the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual leader of the Anglican Church.
